The camp aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike rejected claims of a leadership vacuum in the Peoples Democratic Party following a Supreme Court judgment. The faction maintained that its national leadership continued to steer party affairs without interruption.
The Supreme Court delivered its ruling on Thursday in a split 3-2 decision. The apex court nullified the PDP national convention held in Ibadan in November 2025. It also dismissed an appeal brought by the Tanimu Turaki-led group.
Nyesom Wike addressed journalists at his residence in Abuja shortly after the verdict. He declared that the judgment ended all talk of factions within the party.
“The PDP is one. The judgment has put to rest reactions of factions within the party,” Nyesom Wike said. He added that the Supreme Court validated the legitimate structure and set aside claims to any parallel leadership.
Supporters of the Wike camp insisted that National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu remained in office. They argued that the ruling did not remove the current executives or create any gap in authority. The faction criticised Board of Trustees Chairman Adolphus Wabara and others for attempting an interim takeover.
“There had been no vacuum, obstruction or absence of leadership within the party to justify any interim takeover,” a statement from the Wike-backed group said.
The Board of Trustees led by Adolphus Wabara moved quickly after the judgment. The board announced it assumed leadership to prevent any vacuum at the national level. It called for an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee.
However, the Wike camp dismissed such moves as unnecessary. It maintained that the Supreme Court only addressed specific issues before it and did not dissolve the existing national working committee.
The conflicting positions highlighted the continued divisions in the main opposition party. The PDP had battled internal leadership disputes for months after parallel conventions and suspensions of key officials.
Nyesom Wike stressed that the party now stood united under one leadership. He urged members to focus on rebuilding ahead of future elections rather than prolong disputes.
The Wike-aligned faction warned against further distortion of the court verdict. It called on all stakeholders to respect the judgment and work towards genuine reconciliation.
