Manchester United secured Champions League qualification with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The win guaranteed United a top-five finish in the Premier League with three matches remaining. Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick made one change to his starting XI. He brought Matheus Cunha back into the side after a hip complaint.
Cunha opened the scoring in the sixth minute. His left-footed strike from the edge of the box deflected off Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and nestled into the bottom corner.
United doubled their lead just eight minutes later. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes headed Luke Shaw’s cross back across goal. Liverpool goalkeeper Freddie Woodman could only parry the ball into the midriff of Benjamin Sesko, who bundled it over the line.
VAR conducted an exhaustive check for a potential handball from Sesko. The technology ultimately confirmed the goal. The complexion of the match changed immediately after the break. Carrick introduced Amad Diallo for the injured Sesko at halftime.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai intercepted a loose pass from Diallo just inside his own half just two minutes after the restart. Szoboszlai drove forward, cut inside, and slotted a low left-footed shot beyond United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
United then handed Liverpool a second gift in the 56th minute. Lammens played a woeful pass directly to Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Mac Allister fed Szoboszlai, who squared for Cody Gakpo to tap into an empty net.
The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute. United pressed forward after a sustained spell of possession. A Luke Shaw cross into the box was only partially cleared by the Liverpool defence. Mac Allister’s weak clearance fell to Kobbie Mainoo at the edge of the area. The 21-year-old midfielder swept a precise left-footed finish into the bottom corner, sending the Stretford End into raptures.
Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, Kobbie Mainoo reflected on the victory. “Never an easy game against Liverpool, glad to come out with a win,” said the Manchester United midfielder. “We didn’t come out as sharp as we should have in the second half, but we came away with a win.”
Michael Carrick addressed his Manchester United future after the dramatic win. “Everything has gone so well, but it’s out of my control,” said the Manchester United interim manager.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot offered his assessment. “We conceded two goals and they had a lot of strengths,” said the Liverpool head coach.
Bruno Fernandes provided an honest assessment of the victory. “We didn’t come out as sharp as we should have in the second half, but we came away with a win,” said the Manchester United captain.
