Resident doctors launched their campaign in 2023 to restore pay eroded by inflation since 2008. They accepted a deal in 2024 that delivered significant rises. However, union leaders argued the increases fell short of full restoration.
Doctors received pay rises worth 33 percent over four years, including a 3.5 percent uplift this year. Despite this, the union claimed doctors still earned about a fifth less in real terms than in 2008.
British Medical Association leaders met new Health Secretary James Murray earlier on May 27. They said the talks produced no improved offer. BMA officials described the same unwillingness to move that they experienced with the previous minister.
The union warned of further strikes in July if negotiations failed to advance. Health officials expressed concern over potential disruptions to NHS services. They noted the upcoming action marked the 16th round since the dispute began. Doctors last struck for six days in April.
The planned strike will affect routine care and elective procedures across England. Resident doctors form a vital part of hospital staffing.
