Divers located five out of seven missing men alive in a flooded cave in central Laos on Wednesday. The men entered the cave in Xaisomboun province on May 19 to search for gold. However heavy rains caused flash floods that blocked their exit.
The men waited in a dark terminal chamber approximately 300 meters from the entrance. The rising water levels and mud prevented rescuers from reaching them. Furthermore the remote mountainous terrain severely complicated the rescue operation.
Thai and Laotian rescue teams pumped water out of the passages for days. Divers navigated the restricted tunnels and reached the trapped villagers. The five men sat on a rock, surrounded by floodwater.
Bounkham Luanglath, member of the Lao rescue team, expressed relief. He stated, “I’m still shaking. Our team made it happen.”
The divers provided the survivors with food, water, and medical supplies. Chakkit Taengtang, Thai rescuer, posted a status video. He declared, “We found five Laotians. Everybody is safe. We’ll continue to provide help.”
Although the teams found five men, two villagers remained missing. Rescuers continued their search operations to locate the unaccounted individuals. Meanwhile the extraction of the survivors presented significant difficulties.
The men suffered from dehydration and hunger, leaving them weak. Rescuers worried about carbon dioxide buildup inside the chamber. Therefore the extraction required careful planning.
Mikko Paasi, Finnish diver, highlighted the severity of the upcoming task. He explained, “This is only a brief relief as the five survivors are still in the terminal chamber, all healthy and in good spirits, but the extraction is still ahead and it ain’t going to be easy.”
