Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick confirmed Marcus Rashford remained part of his plans after the forward returned to pre-season training.
Carrick spoke after United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United in Dublin. He stated that Rashford had rejoined the squad in positive form. “He’s our player and he’s come back great,” Carrick said. “I’ve known him a long time and he gives us something a little bit different. We’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
Rashford spent the previous season on loan at Barcelona. The Spanish club chose not to activate their option to buy him permanently. As a result, the England forward returned to Old Trafford under contract until 2028.
He had last featured for United in December 2024. Before the Barcelona move, he also spent time on loan at Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Carrick had taken permanent charge after guiding the team to a strong finish the prior campaign.
Rashford trained with the full squad in Ireland for two or three days. Carrick explained that the forward, along with Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo, was not yet ready for the Leeds match. He preserved them for the final pre-season friendly.
United prepared to face AC Milan next. Carrick stressed that Rashford fitted in normally and arrived in good spirits. The coach had played alongside the forward earlier in his career and later coached him on the staff.
Carrick indicated the squad looked ahead to the Premier League opener. Rashford offered a different option on the left flank or through the middle. United had considered adding another forward earlier in the window but adjusted plans once the Barcelona deal ended.
The comments came as the club completed its pre-season programme. Carrick’s words marked a clear shift from earlier seasons when Rashford fell out of favour under previous managers.
