TRANSFER NEWS: Man City reject £55m Barcelona offer for Rodri

Manchester City rejected a second bid from Barcelona for midfielder Rodri on Wednesday. The offer reached £55 million and fell short of the Premier League club’s valuation.

City had already turned down an earlier approach of around £40 million last week. Sources indicated the English side sought a fee above £60 million for the Spain international. Talks continued between the clubs after the latest rejection.

Rodri entered the final year of his deal at the Etihad Stadium. He had yet to agree an extension. The 30-year-old returned to form at the recent World Cup, where he captained Spain to the title and won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

Barcelona secured the player’s approval to open negotiations. Reports stated Rodri preferred a move to the Catalan club over Real Madrid. Real Madrid had earlier explored a deal but stepped back once Barcelona took the lead.

City officials made clear they remained open to a sale only at their price. They paid £62.6 million for Rodri when he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2019. The midfielder helped the club win multiple Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.

Barcelona planned to improve their offer further. Meanwhile, City had already strengthened their midfield with the arrival of Elliot Anderson. The club also monitored other options in case Rodri departed.

Rodri recovered from minor back surgery and remained on holiday while negotiations progressed. City head coach Enzo Maresca prepared the squad for the new season without confirming any exit. Barcelona aimed to resolve the matter before their own pre-season intensified.
