Aisha Yesufu Gets Major Backing From Sowore Ahead of 2027 Elections

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore supported fellow activist Aisha Yesufu’s decision to run for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections. He criticised her choice of political platform.

Omoyele Sowore threw his weight behind Aisha Yesufu’s senatorial ambition during a recent interview. The former presidential candidate stated that he backed her fully and hoped she would win the seat. He described her as a strong voice with the potential to contribute effectively in the Senate.

Sowore made his position clear while addressing concerns about the political landscape ahead of the polls. He praised her commitment to public service through activism and encouraged her pursuit of elective office.

Despite his endorsement, Omoyele Sowore questioned Aisha Yesufu’s move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress. He argued that she joined the wrong party for her ambitions. Sowore suggested that she should have aligned with the African Action Congress instead.

He said, “So I totally support her, and I hope she wins, even though I think that she is in the wrong party. She should have joined our party.” Sowore highlighted the need for credible voices to join stronger platforms that align with revolutionary change.

Aisha Yesufu recently left the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress. She declared her intention to contest the FCT senatorial seat under the new platform. Her decision formed part of ongoing realignments among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections.

Yesufu positioned her bid as a continuation of her activism. She vowed to resist any form of electoral manipulation if she secured the ticket and advanced to the general election.

The development sparked discussions about the role of activists in formal politics and the strategic choices facing opposition candidates. Omoyele Sowore’s comments reflected both unity in support for progressive voices and ongoing debates over party structures in Nigeria’s political space.
