Tinubu Creates New Homeland Security Office, Appoints Former Army General

President Bola Tinubu created the new position of Special Adviser on Homeland Security and appointed a retired army general to fill it on Monday. The move marked the first time Nigeria established such a dedicated federal role focused on internal security coordination.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation announced the appointment through a circular. Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. George Akume signed the document, and Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana issued it.

President Bola Tinubu appointed retired Major General Adeyinka A. Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security. Fadewa served for over three decades in the Nigerian Army. He held key roles in intelligence, counter-terrorism, and strategic operations.

Fadewa previously worked as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser from 2015 to 2021. He established the Intelligence Fusion Centre during that period. Officials highlighted his expertise in intelligence integration and proactive security management.

President Bola Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment would enhance efforts toward a safer Nigeria. The statement noted that Fadewa would improve coordination of homeland security initiatives, intelligence sharing, and risk management.

The development came as part of ongoing steps by the administration to address internal security challenges. No further details on the adviser’s specific mandate or reporting structure emerged immediately. Observers viewed the creation of the role as a signal of renewed focus on domestic threats separate from broader national security functions.
