World Cup: England Edge DR Congo 2-1 to Reach Last 16

England defeated DR Congo 2-1 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match on July 1. The Three Lions overcame an early deficit and secured a place in the last 16. They will face Mexico next.

DR Congo took the lead in the seventh minute. Brian Cipenga finished a looping cross from defender Chancel Mbemba with a low shot past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The underdogs defended bravely and created problems for England throughout the first half. Yoane Wissa even struck the post as DR Congo pushed forward.

England increased pressure after halftime. Coach Thomas Tuchel introduced Anthony Gordon, who changed the momentum. In the 75th minute, Gordon delivered a precise cross. Captain Harry Kane headed the ball powerfully into the net to equalize.

England continued to attack. In the 86th minute, Gordon set up another chance. Harry Kane surged into the box and fired a strong shot into the top corner for the winning goal. DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made several strong saves but could not prevent the comeback.

The match took place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta before 68,239 fans. England dominated possession yet needed Kane’s brace to advance. DR Congo earned praise for their spirited performance in their first World Cup knockout appearance.
