Switzerland Beat Canada and Advance to World Cup Round of 32

Switzerland claimed top spot in Group B with a 2-1 victory over co-host Canada on Tuesday at BC Place in Vancouver.

The result sent Murat Yakin’s team into the knockout stage as group winners. Canada still qualified for the round of 32 but will face a tougher path away from home soil.

Switzerland took control early in the second half. Rubén Vargas scored in the 46th minute to give his team the lead. Johan Manzambi added a second goal in the 57th minute.

The Swiss side showed clinical finishing and solid organization. They earned seven points from the group stage and secured a favorable position for the next round.

Jesse Marsch’s Canada team pushed forward after falling behind. Promise David pulled one goal back in the 76th minute. Canada created several chances late in the match but could not equalize.

Canada finished the group with four points. The team advanced to the round of 32 for the first time in its history in a full group stage at a World Cup.

Switzerland topped Group B and will play a third-place team from another group in Vancouver on July 2. Canada placed second and will travel for its round of 32 match.

Bosnia and Herzegovina also advanced from the group after a win over Qatar. All three co-host nations reached the knockout stage.

The match highlighted Switzerland’s efficiency against a determined Canadian side that showed resilience but missed key opportunities. Both teams now prepare for the knockout rounds.
