Tottenham Hotspur reached an agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of midfielder Sandro Tonali in a deal worth up to 100 million pounds.
Tottenham Hotspur broke their transfer record on Wednesday after they agreed a fee with Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali. Reports indicated the north London club will pay an initial 92.5 million pounds, with another 7.5 million pounds in add-ons linked to Champions League qualifications.
Newcastle United accepted the proposal after earlier rejecting a lower bid from Spurs. The Italian international had expressed interest in the move and agreed personal terms with Tottenham, which included a significant wage increase to around 275,000 pounds per week on a six-year contract.
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi identified Tonali as his top target. The Italian manager pushed for the signing to strengthen the midfield as he rebuilt the squad following the previous season. Tonali, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023, delivered consistent performances for the Magpies after returning from a suspension.
The 26-year-old midfielder added quality and energy in central areas. Newcastle United sold the player despite his contract running until 2029. The deal marked another major departure for the club after they transferred Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer.
This move followed Tottenham’s recent club-record signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for 85 million pounds. The acquisition of Tonali pushed Spurs’ spending higher as they aimed to compete for European places under De Zerbi.
Journalists including David Ornstein and Alasdair Gold confirmed the agreement. Fabrizio Romano reported that all parties completed the necessary steps, with Tonali set to undergo medical examinations soon. The transfer highlighted Tottenham’s ambition in the market.
Newcastle United will now focus on squad adjustments after the high-profile exit. Meanwhile, Spurs moved closer to finalizing one of the biggest deals in their history.
