Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru is dead. He was 57. His family announced his passing in a statement posted on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. The statement said he died after a brief illness but did not disclose further details.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen,” the statement read.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria also confirmed the death. Its president, Abubakar Yakubu, wrote on Facebook: “Another great thespian is gone. Rest in peace, Francis Duru.” Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood Awards, also announced the development on social media, writing, “Francis Duru is dead. Details later.”
Duru’s death comes months after he dismissed reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness. In June 2026, concern spread among fans and colleagues after a video showing the actor looking frail circulated on social media. He responded with a video on Instagram describing the footage as “fabricated and malicious.”
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria for university. He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
He began his acting career in 1989 with Missing Mark, a film directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko. The role did little to advance his career at the time, as he was still an emerging actor. Wider recognition came in 1995 when he starred as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, an action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. The performance established him as a recognised figure in Nollywood.
Over a career spanning more than three decades, Duru appeared in several films, including Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020). In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He was also named a United Nations ambassador of peace in 2007 in recognition of his influence on young people. In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards the same year.
Beyond acting, Duru was involved in theatre and consultancy work within the entertainment industry.
He married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and the union produced four children. The family suffered a painful loss in August 2024 when one of their children, Ifeanyi, died at 15. Duru announced the death in an emotional Instagram post and later spoke publicly about coping with the loss while continuing his professional responsibilities.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and colleagues across the Nigerian film industry, many of whom described him as a dedicated professional and a mentor to younger actors. His death is a fresh loss to Nollywood, where he was known for his long-standing contribution to the growth of the industry.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
