China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, stated that the economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda are producing tangible results and should be consolidated beyond 2027.
The envoy made the remarks during a courtesy visit to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Thursday. Busola Kukoyi, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the First Lady, released a statement confirming the details of the meeting.
Yu noted that bilateral trade between Nigeria and China reached 18 billion dollars in the first half of the year. He observed that Nigeria has taken a new shape on strong macroeconomic footing over the past three years. According to the statement, the ambassador pointed to renewed and stronger confidence among foreign investors. He affirmed that China would not shy away from participating in these opportunities.
The envoy highlighted that Nigeria’s exports to China have increased tremendously in the last three years. He urged the country to stay the course by maintaining faith in the ongoing reforms. Yu further stated that China would deepen relations based on the principle that Africa’s resources belong to Africa, alongside high-quality investment and the use of domestic human capital.
This marked Yu’s first visit to the First Lady since he assumed office two years ago. The meeting aimed to express China’s admiration for the Renewed Hope Agenda and the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative. It also sought to explore further collaboration in health, education and food security.
In her response, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu described an endorsement of the President’s second term by a strong ally such as China as cheering. She committed to encouraging partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.
