Mexico launched the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a solid performance on Thursday as the co-hosts defeated South Africa 2-0 at Mexico City Stadium. The hosts controlled the match from early on and capitalized on key opportunities while South Africa struggled after receiving multiple red cards.
Mexico forward Julian Quinones opened the scoring in the ninth minute. He pounced on a loose ball in South Africa’s defensive third and finished clinically. The goal energized the crowd of over 80,000 and gave Mexico an immediate advantage in their Group A clash.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre praised his team’s start. “The players showed intensity and took advantage of the spaces,” he said after the match.
Mexico extended the lead in the 67th minute. Veteran striker Raul Jimenez rose at the back post to head home a cross and seal the victory. Jimenez described the moment as special. “It was a long wait for a World Cup goal, but the team worked hard for it,” he noted.
South Africa faced disciplinary issues. Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole received a red card in the 49th minute for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Later, teammate Themba Zwane also saw red. Mexico defender Cesar Montes picked up a late red card in stoppage time, but the hosts had already secured the three points. The match featured three red cards total.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos reflected on the challenges. “We fought hard, but the red cards made it difficult against a strong home side,” Broos stated.
The win marked Mexico’s first victory in a World Cup opener in recent history. South Africa, which drew 1-1 with Mexico in the 2010 tournament opener, started their campaign with a loss. Mexico now sits atop Group A with three points.
