Ozoh Chinedu, a newly signed player for Katsina United Football Club, died after a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly match. The incident took place at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
Katsina United faced Niger Tornadoes in the match as both teams prepared for the new season. Chinedu suffered the emergency during the game. Officials and medical staff attended to him immediately on the field.
Staff then took Chinedu to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts to save his life, he passed away in the early hours of Tuesday. The club confirmed the death later that day.
Katsina United released an official statement. It stated: “The football community in Katsina State and beyond has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Ozoh, a newly signed player of Katsina United Football Club and former Kano Pillars FC player.”
“Ozoh reportedly passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, after he was rushed to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina following a medical emergency during a friendly match involving Katsina United and Niger Tornadoes FC at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina,” the statement concluded.
The statement added that the player was immediately attended to and subsequently rushed to the hospital. However, he did not survive.
In a further post, Katsina United said: “We mourn the tragic passing of our newly signed player, Ozoh Chinedu, following a medical emergency during today’s friendly match against Niger Tornadoes FC. Our thoughts, prayers, and strength are with his family and loved ones. Rest on Warrior.”
Chinedu previously played for Kano Pillars FC. He had just joined Katsina United and prepared to contribute in the upcoming season.
The circumstances of his death remained under review at the time of the announcement, with further details expected from medical authorities or his family.
