Six members of the House of Representatives from Oyo State defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Allied Peoples Movement on Tuesday. The lawmakers acted in support of Governor Seyi Makinde.
The six representatives joined the APM amid ongoing leadership disputes in the PDP. Anthony Adebayo, who represents a federal constituency in Oyo, announced his exit along with five colleagues. Adedeji Olajide, the member for Ibadan North-West/South-West, also moved to the new party. Sunday Makanjuola, Oyedeji Oyeshina, Fola Oyekunle, and Adigun Adekunle completed the list.
Adedeji Olajide explained his decision in a statement. He pointed to the prolonged crisis and legal battles within the PDP as key reasons for his departure. Anthony Adebayo echoed similar concerns about the party’s instability. The defectors stated that they sought a platform for effective representation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move strengthened Governor Seyi Makinde’s position. The six lawmakers formed part of the 14 member Oyo caucus in the House of Representatives. With this shift, Makinde took six representatives with him to the APM. Earlier reports showed other loyalists, including former Rep member Shina Peller, also joined the APM.
Political observers noted that the defections followed an alliance between Makinde’s PDP faction and the APM. The parties signed a memorandum of understanding to contest future elections under the APM banner.
The development highlighted divisions in Oyo PDP. It occurred as preparations for the 2027 general elections gained momentum. The defectors expressed confidence that the APM offered better prospects for progressive governance in the state.
