Anambra State Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu led a combined team of the Nigerian Army, the Anambra State Police Command, and the Agunechemba Security Squad to Ndiukwuenu community in Orumba North Local Government Area. The team visited the scene where gunmen killed two police officers on Sunday night.
Gunmen ambushed a team of police officers along the Amansea-Ndiora-Ndiukwuenu-Awa-Ufuma Road. The officers returned from an assignment when attackers opened fire on their vehicle. Two officers died instantly in the attack. As a result, security forces launched immediate operations in the area.
Ikioye Orutugu confirmed the incident to journalists. “A team of police officers was returning from an assignment when they were ambushed by armed men who opened fire on them. In the process, we lost two officers,” he stated.
The commissioner then mobilized a joint team and visited the community to assess the situation firsthand. Transitioning from the initial response, the team gathered evidence at the scene and coordinated with local residents.
Ikioye Orutugu issued a 48-hour ultimatum to all police formations and operational units. He directed them to track down the killers. “We have been working on the matter since Sunday night and intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators,” the commissioner added.
The attack also targeted the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Governor Charles Soludo, Chief Ben Nwankwo, though the chief escaped unhurt.
Security sources reported that the gunmen fled after the exchange of fire. As a result, the joint team combed surrounding areas for leads. Community leaders in Ndiukwuenu cooperated with the security operatives during the visit.
Ikioye Orutugu assured residents that the command would restore normalcy. The police continued investigations into the ambush as operations expanded across Orumba South and nearby areas. No group claimed responsibility for the attack.
