JUST IN: Oyo Allocates ₦4.28bn for December Local Government Elections

The Oyo State Government and its 33 local government councils approved a total of N4.278 billion to fund chairmanship and councillorship elections set for December 29, 2026.

Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information, announced the decision in a statement issued after the state Executive Council meeting on Tuesday. He said the council approved the state’s counterpart funding to the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission to begin preparations for the polls.

The elections will cover all 33 local government areas in the state. The local government councils will provide 60 per cent of the total cost, amounting to N2.5668 billion. Meanwhile, the state government will contribute the remaining 40 per cent, or N1.7112 billion.

Oyelade stated that the arrangement allows both levels of government to share the financial responsibility for the exercise.

Following the approval, the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission can now receive the funds and start logistical arrangements. The polls will determine chairmen and councillors across the local government areas.

Oyelade confirmed that the Executive Council reached the decision during its regular sitting. He added that the funding covers the full cost of conducting the elections on the scheduled date.

The commissioner further noted that the state government and the local councils worked together on the funding plan. This cooperation, he said, supports the timely organisation of the December polls.

The announcement marks a key step toward the local government elections in Oyo State. Officials indicated that the shared funding model ensures the process moves forward without delay.
