The move followed outbreaks of Bundibugyo virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. DRC health authorities declared the outbreak on May 15, 2026, after they confirmed cases in Ituri Province. Uganda reported imported cases from DRC shortly afterward.
Dr. Ihekweazu stated that Nigeria’s risk level remained low. However, officials boosted screening at land borders, airports, and seaports. They also issued fresh guidelines to health workers for early detection and management of potential cases.
Nigeria Federal Government officials activated emergency preparedness plans. They placed health facilities on alert and intensified monitoring in high-risk states. Transitioning from routine operations, authorities focused on contact tracing protocols and laboratory readiness.
DRC reported over 100 confirmed cases with multiple deaths by late May. Uganda confirmed several linked cases, including one death. World Health Organization officials declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern on May 17, 2026.
Nigerian officials coordinated with regional partners. They shared information on traveler screening and strengthened cross-border collaboration. Dr. Ihekweazu noted that Uganda remained the only country outside DRC with confirmed cases at that time.
Health teams conducted training sessions for frontline workers. They emphasized infection prevention and community engagement. Officials also monitored international flights and major entry points more closely.
Authorities continued daily assessments of the situation. They urged citizens to report symptoms such as fever, body pain, and vomiting promptly. Nigerian health leaders stressed that early detection helped contain previous outbreaks successfully.
