Businessman Isaac Fayose welcomed Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, to his Abuja residence on Saturday. Fayose publicly hailed Obi as the incoming president during the meeting.
Fayose made the remarks in a video that circulated online. He stated, “Our incoming president. I am 100% Obidient. We’re together, and we’re winning.” He hosted Obi warmly at his home.
Days earlier, Fayose had criticised Obi. The businessman expressed disappointment over the lack of personal appreciation from Obi despite his campaign support in 2023. Fayose said he spent money on the campaign, made his hotel available to supporters, and joined protests.
Fayose questioned Obi’s gratitude in a viral video. He asked, “Has Obi visited me since I started campaigning for him?” He highlighted a recent meeting with Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, where he prayed for the family and expressed affection.
Obidients reacted strongly to Fayose’s comments and his association with the Tinubu family. Fayose hit back at the critics. He warned that he could withdraw his support.
Peter Obi visited Fayose less than 24 hours after the outburst. During their conversation, Obi addressed the backlash. He said, “All those abusing you are not our members. They are members of other parties pretending to be Obidients.”
Fayose responded positively. He reaffirmed his loyalty and prayed for Obi’s success. The meeting appeared to mend ties between the two.
The development comes amid ongoing political discussions ahead of future elections. Fayose, younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, remains a vocal figure in Nigerian politics. Observers noted the swift shift from criticism to endorsement.
