Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar won the African Democratic Congress presidential primary in Sokoto State on Monday. He polled 68,823 votes out of 69,434 total votes cast across the 23 local government areas.
Party officials conducted the direct primary across all wards in the state. Delegates participated actively in the voting process. Atiku defeated other aspirants by a wide margin. Professor, who served as the returning officer, announced the results at the end of collation.
“I therefore hereby declare Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate with the highest number of votes cast in Sokoto,” the returning officer said.
Earlier, Sokoto ADC leaders held consultations and adopted Atiku as the preferred candidate. Muktari S. Magori, former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, addressed party members at a press briefing.
“The essence of this press conference is to officially announce the consensus reached by members and stakeholders of the ADC in Sokoto State to adopt His Excellency, former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Wazirin Adamawa, as the party’s sole presidential candidate ahead of the primaries,” Magori stated.
Moreover the victory strengthens Atiku’s position in the North-West zone ahead of the national primary. Party members expressed confidence in his candidacy for the 2027 general elections.
Additionally, the result highlights Atiku’s continued influence in northern politics. Observers noted the smooth conduct of the exercise despite national party dynamics. Atiku also voted in his home state of Adamawa during the primaries.
The Sokoto outcome adds to early indications from other states where Atiku performed strongly. Party officials will collate results from across Nigeria in the coming days.
