The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State moved swiftly on its ticket formation when governorship candidate Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo picked Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 elections.
Gwarzo, who served as deputy governor of Kano State until April 2026, announced the choice after a caucus meeting at the residence of influential politician Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. The decision united Gwarzo’s administrative experience with Mustapha Kwankwaso’s youth appeal and family ties to the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Both candidates switched to the NDC after brief stints with the African Democratic Congress. They entered the party backed by Kwankwaso’s political structure, which challenged the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the state.
Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo worked closely with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in previous administrations. He brought governance expertise to the ticket.
Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of the former governor, previously served as commissioner for youth and sports development. He resigned from that position earlier in 2026 amid political realignments.
The pair aimed to consolidate support in Kano’s political heartlands. Supporters described the ticket as strong for reclaiming influence in the state.
Party insiders viewed the selection as a move to strengthen grassroots mobilization. Critics, however, raised concerns about dynastic politics within the movement. The NDC leadership continued preparations for candidate affirmation exercises in the state.
This development formed part of broader opposition realignments ahead of the 2027 polls, as the NDC positioned itself as a key player in Kano politics. The ticket combined established loyalty with fresh generational energy in the state’s competitive landscape.
