Barcelona Beat Getafe 2-0 to Go 11 Points Clear at the Top

Midfielder Fermin Lopez broke the deadlock for Barcelona in the 45th minute at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. Lopez kept his composure to slot home a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner. Pedri provided the assist with a through ball during a fast break.

Furthermore, the midfielder imitated Lamine Yamal’s usual “304” celebration as a tribute to the injured teenage star. Lopez later told Movistar, “We were aware of what was going to happen here, we were going to have few chances.” He added, “We know we’ve got a big advantage but even so, we can’t relax.”

Substitute Marcus Rashford doubled Barcelona’s lead in the 74th minute. Rashford fired a right-footed shot from outside the box into the center of the goal. Robert Lewandowski assisted the England international after a fast break.

Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí also made a crucial goal-line block to deny Getafe midfielder Mario Martín moments before the counter-attack. Getafe goalkeeper David Soria told reporters, “They were very efficient, you give away two chances and they score them both.”

The victory moved Barcelona 11 points clear of second place Real Madrid. The defending champions extended their winning streak to four consecutive league matches. Hansi Flick’s side required Real Madrid to drop points against Real Betis on Friday before kickoff.

Barcelona can now secure their second consecutive Spanish title next weekend if they beat Osasuna and Real Madrid fail to defeat Espanyol. Flick told the media, “It’s not easy to defend the way we did and stay focused, but today we did it almost perfectly.” He then stated, “We’ll celebrate if we win the title when the time comes.”
