AC Milan sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri on Monday after the team finished fifth in Serie A and missed Champions League qualification. The club described the 2025-26 campaign as an unequivocal failure.
Milan led the top two positions for much of the season. However, a late collapse ended their hopes. The Rossoneri lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari on the final day. This result dropped them from third to fifth place.
RedBird Capital Partners, the club’s ownership group, acted swiftly. The owners parted ways with several key figures. They sacked chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada alongside Allegri.
In a statement, the club explained the decision. “The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point,” officials said. “Last night’s disappointing loss turned the season into an unequivocal failure.”
Allegri returned to AC Milan in May 2025. He replaced previous coach Sérgio Conceição. The experienced tactician brought stability expectations after his successful Juventus spells. Yet the team failed to secure a top-four finish for the second consecutive year.
Zlatan Ibrahimović will guide the rebuild process. Reports indicate the club holds talks with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as a potential replacement. Iraola earned praise for his high-pressing style.
The sacking marks a significant shift for the 19-time Serie A champions. Milan now face the challenge of rebuilding both on and off the pitch to regain their place among Europe’s elite. The club aims to return to Champions League competition next season.
