Matheus Cunha scored twice in the final stages as UCL: Cunha Inspires Man United to Victory Over Roma as Bayern Sink Atletico Madrid overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Roma 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Meanwhile Bayern Munich defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0 away.
Roma took the lead in the 11th minute when Matías Soulé found the net. Donyell Malen then converted a penalty seven minutes later to make it 2-0. The visitors held their advantage at half-time.
Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit from the penalty spot in the 58th minute after an initial effort was ordered to be retaken. Leonardo Balerdi then misjudged a clearance in the 83rd minute. Cunha reacted first and slotted home the equaliser.
Three minutes later Cunha struck again. He received a pass from Shea Lacey and fired a near-post shot past the goalkeeper to complete the turnaround. United secured their first win in 10 matches across all competitions.
Cunha received a second yellow card in stoppage time for a foul and left the field. Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said afterwards: “They kept going, didn’t get disappointed and got exactly what they deserved in the end.” He added that he had urged the players at half-time to stay positive because anything can happen.
In the other match Bayern Munich travelled to Atletico Madrid. The first half ended goalless. Lennart Karl then opened the scoring in the 54th minute after he dispossessed Robin Le Normand and chipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Konrad Laimer added the second goal in the 74th minute. Harry Kane supplied the pass and Laimer finished clinically. Bayern therefore claimed three points on the road.
Laimer later described his finish: “Oh yes that feels really good.” He also said the team had produced a very deserved win against a good side and taken important points.
