J.D. Vance to Lead U.S. Delegation for Iran Talks in Pakistan — White House

US Vice President JD Vance will lead the American delegation for upcoming talks with Iran in Pakistan. A White House official announced the decision on Sunday. The move followed comments from President Donald Trump that raised doubts about Vance making the trip.

President Donald Trump told reporters he would not send Vance to Pakistan over security concerns. Trump spoke to ABC News earlier on Sunday. Despite the statement, White House officials later confirmed Vance would head the team. The reversal came as tensions persisted over a fragile ceasefire between the two nations.

Vice President JD Vance will join special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner for the negotiations in Islamabad. The White House official shared the delegation details with AFP on condition of anonymity. The three officials will represent the United States in direct discussions with Iranian counterparts.

The upcoming round seeks a lasting peace agreement after previous sessions in Pakistan failed to produce a full deal. Earlier talks stretched over 21 hours without resolution.

Iran refused American demands on its nuclear program during those meetings. Vance stated afterward that the lack of agreement hurt Iran more than the United States.

The negotiations follow a ceasefire that officials described as fragile and set to expire soon. President Donald Trump repeated threats against Iranian infrastructure while pushing for dialogue.

Pakistani officials hosted both delegations in Islamabad for the face-to-face meetings. The White House expressed hope that the new round would build on prior exchanges.

Vice President JD Vance prepared to travel despite the earlier uncertainty. The announcement marked a significant step in efforts to resolve longstanding differences between Washington and Tehran.
