Congo Jails FA Boss to Jail Over $1.3m Fraud as Nigerian Football Officials Escape Justice in Larger Scandals

A court in the Republic of Congo sentenced Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, the president of the Congolese Football Federation, to life imprisonment on March 10, 2026. The same court handed life terms to his wife and son.

Mayolas assumed office in 2018. Prosecutors proved he diverted $1.3 million provided by FIFA for grassroots development and the women’s national team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The court convicted Mayolas of money laundering, embezzlement and forgery. Evidence showed officials routed nearly $500,000 earmarked for the women’s team through shell companies.

They used the money for personal gain instead of football projects. The ruling arrived after an eight-month investigation. Judges delivered the verdict in Mayolas’ absence.

Meanwhile Nigerian football officials escaped prosecution despite larger alleged scandals. In 2018, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charged three Nigeria Football Federation officials with misusing $9.5 million in FIFA grants meant for development.

Authorities also probed former NFF president Amaju Pinnick and four others over millions in appearance fees from the 2014 World Cup.

The Nigerian government withdrew the corruption charges against Pinnick and the others in 2019. Courts cleared the officials. Separate probes into billions in sponsorship funds and grants produced no convictions. Nigerian authorities seized some properties but filed no jail sentences. This pattern left bigger diversions unpunished.

The cases highlight sharp differences in how two African nations handled football corruption. Congo enforced a severe penalty. Nigeria dropped cases against its officials.
