US designates Iran officials as WHO decries attacks on healthcare

The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on Iranian officials implicated in coordinating the brutal crackdown on protesters across the nation.

The U.S. designated six officials who oversee the Islamic Republic’s security forces, and an Iranian investor accused of embezzling “billions in funds” from the people.

Despite the widespread outcry against “47 years of catastrophic economic mismanagement,” Iran’s leadership focuses on other things, Washington asserts.

“Iran continues to choose funding terrorist militias abroad and its vast weapons programs over the basic needs of everyday Iranians,” a State Department readout noted.

It said civilians suffer from rising inflation, crumbling infrastructure, and water and electricity shortages “because the regime is squandering their wealth on its malign activities.”

The American government reiterated its support for the Iranian people in their demonstration against “the corrupt and repressive regime in Tehran.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has deplored the attacks on medical services at Khomeini Hospital, following the transfer of injured protesters there.

The UN agency also confirmed targeting of health facilities throughout Iran, including 10 prehospital emergency posts, with over 50 paramedics injured and over 200 ambulances damaged.

“Healthcare should never be a target,” said WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus. He demanded that health facilities be protected to be able to deliver critical services.

Reacting, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) cited reports of assault of healthcare workers by security forces, and the detention of at least five, who provided medical aid to wounded protesters.

Dr. Alireza Golchini, a surgeon in the city of Qazvin, has been arrested and faces charges that could result in the death penalty, according to Hengaw, a human rights group.

In a statement, PHR’s executive director, Sam Zarifi, noted that evidence coming out of Iran “points to tens of thousands of protesters killed or injured, many by live ammunition.”

“It is necessary to pursue justice and accountability for these grave and systematic crimes, through international mechanisms or through the exercise of universal jurisdiction in other countries,” Zarifi said.

PHR declared support for the UN Human Rights Council resolution, urging its Fact-Finding Mission to probe the rights violations and crimes committed by the Iranian authorities since December 28, 2025.
