Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, said on Wednesday that he would resign if President Bola Tinubu lost the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election. He spoke in Abuja during a meeting with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association.
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media to the minister, issued a statement on the remarks. Wike set a date. The presidential poll was scheduled for 16 January 2027. He said he would quit the next day if those two areas fell.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said. He added, “If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”
He told the gathering that the FCT was where he worked and Rivers was his state. “If I lose FCT, I have no business being the minister,” he said. He also said, “If I go back to my state and the president cannot win, then why am I shouting about president, president, president when I cannot win?”
Wike said a multi-party coalition was being built in the territory. “In the FCT, we are running a unified coalition across parties to deliver results,” he said. He added, “If I cannot deliver FCT as Minister, then I am not qualified to hold this office. We have a firm agreement, and today is the final affirmation.”
He named Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the presidency and Philip Aduda for the Senate. He also said the coalition would back two House of Representatives candidates who were former area council chairmen. The meeting also covered plans to relocate Apo mechanics and traders to the Wasa informal sector by the end of the year.
