Morocco defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup on Monday. The thrilling Round of 32 encounter at Estadio BBVA finished 1-1 after extra time.
Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 72nd minute. He finished a clever pass from Crysencio Summerville. Gakpo sank to the turf after the goal. His teammates surrounded him in a prolonged embrace. The Liverpool forward played just days after his partner confirmed the death of their unborn son.
Morocco refused to surrender. Defender Issa Diop headed home a dramatic equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time. Substitute Chemsdine Talbi delivered the cross. The goal forced the match into extra time.
Neither team managed a clear scoring opportunity in the additional 30 minutes. Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi came close in the 96th minute. He went through on goal but Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a remarkable save. The score remained 1-1 at the final whistle.
The penalty shootout proved tense and dramatic. Morocco missed their first penalty when Neil El-Aynaoui hit the bar. The shootout reached 2-2 after four rounds. Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then made the crucial save. He dived sharply to his left to palm away Summerville’s effort.
Striker Ismael Saibari stepped up for the decisive kick. He placed a composed low finish into the bottom-left corner as Verbruggen dived the wrong way. Saibari’s strike sealed a 3-2 shootout victory for Morocco.
The result marked the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup exit in recent memory. The Dutch had reached at least the Round of 16 in their eight previous appearances. Morocco, ranked sixth in the world, outplayed the seventh-ranked Netherlands in most statistics.
Morocco will face co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston. The Atlas Lions reached the semifinals in the previous World Cup.
