The political reconciliation between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has taken another significant step forward after the two politicians met in Port Harcourt.
Wike received Fubara at his residence on Sunday, August 30, in what is being described as their first reported face-to-face meeting since the governor announced that he would not seek re-election in the 2027 Rivers governorship election.
The meeting is particularly significant because of the bitter political dispute that previously divided the two former allies and plunged Rivers State into months of intense political tension.
Fubara arrived at Wike’s residence accompanied by former All Progressives Congress, APC, Deputy National Chairman, Sam Jaja. Wike, meanwhile, was joined by Kingsley Chinda, the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, and Senator Magnus Abe, chairman of the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee.
The development comes after weeks of reconciliation efforts aimed at bringing the different political camps in Rivers closer together ahead of the 2027 elections. The Magnus Abe-led committee had previously met with Fubara and his representatives as part of efforts to rebuild cooperation among the factions.
Fubara had also publicly urged political stakeholders to respect the reconciliation process, declaring that Rivers State was now experiencing what he described as a “state of rest” following the prolonged political crisis. He maintained that peace was essential to the development of the state.
Wike, who served as Rivers governor from 2015 to 2023 before handing over to Fubara, had previously blamed the breakdown in their relationship on the governor’s decision to distance himself from the political structure that produced him. Speaking during a media chat in August, Wike said Fubara’s move to establish an independent political structure had jeopardised his chances of securing a second term.
The latest meeting therefore carries considerable political weight as attention increasingly shifts toward 2027. Fubara’s decision not to contest the governorship election has already altered the political calculations in Rivers, while the growing presence of key figures from both camps suggests that efforts to consolidate the emerging alliance are continuing.
Although no detailed communiqué has been released on the issues discussed during the private meeting, the direct engagement between Wike and Fubara signals a notable development in their previously fractured relationship.
With Rivers politics entering a new phase, the meeting could prove to be an important step in determining how the state’s political structure takes shape ahead of the 2027 elections.
