Actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo declared that a vote for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election equals support for President Bola Tinubu. He made the statement during a television interview on June 3, 2026.
Okonkwo, who served as a spokesman for Peter Obi’s Labour Party campaign in 2023, argued that the former Anambra State governor’s move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress splits the opposition. He explained that this division hands victory to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“Voting for Peter Obi in 2027 is a vote for Tinubu,” Kenneth Okonkwo stated. He added that fragmented opposition votes strengthen Tinubu’s position.
Kenneth Okonkwo previously backed Peter Obi but later distanced himself. He cited Obi’s frequent party changes as a key issue. Obi moved from the Labour Party after the 2023 election to a short stint with the African Democratic Congress before joining the NDC. Okonkwo described this pattern as disruptive.
Moreover he pointed to recent defections by some Labour Party members in Enugu State to the APC. These shifts, according to Okonkwo, showed weakening support for opposition platforms.
Okonkwo urged opposition leaders to form a united front. He suggested collaboration with figures like Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party to challenge the APC effectively. He stressed that without unity, the opposition risks another loss in 2027.
Peter Obi has not issued an immediate response to Okonkwo’s comments. Political analysts note that the 2027 race already shows signs of deep divisions within opposition ranks.
Kenneth Okonkwo concluded that Nigerians must prioritize strategies that avoid indirect aid to the incumbent. His remarks highlight ongoing tensions among opposition groups as the election cycle approaches.
