Iranian state media reported on Monday that Iranian forces struck a United States warship with two missiles in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred near Jask Island after the vessel ignored warnings to stop, according to the reports.
Fars News Agency, which maintains close ties to Iran’s military, stated that the attack forced the ship to retreat. Iranian officials said the warship attempted to enter the strait without permission during a period of heightened tensions.
United States Central Command quickly rejected the Iranian claims. CENTCOM officials confirmed that no American vessel sustained a missile strike. They added that US Navy ships continued operations under Project Freedom, an initiative announced by President Donald Trump to escort stranded commercial vessels through the waterway.
A senior US official told reporters that American destroyers had successfully transited parts of the strait as part of efforts to counter Iran’s blockade. The official stressed that US forces maintained full operational capability in the region.
The reported clash followed President Donald Trump’s launch of Project Freedom earlier on Monday. Trump directed US naval assets to guide ships trapped by Iranian restrictions in the Persian Gulf. Iranian authorities had previously warned that they would target any unauthorized US vessels entering the strait.
Iranian military spokesmen described the action as a defensive measure to protect maritime security. They claimed the US ship violated established navigation norms in the area.
