England advanced to the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday after they defeated co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in a dramatic Round of 16 clash at Estadio Azteca. Jude Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane added a penalty as England overcame a red card and intense pressure.
Thunderstorms delayed the kickoff by an hour in Mexico City. Mexico attacked early with strong home support. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made key saves, including one from Raul Jimenez.
England forward Jude Bellingham opened the scoring around the 36th minute. He headed home a cross from Bukayo Saka. Bellingham struck again just two minutes later. Captain Harry Kane assisted the goal as England led 2-0.
Mexico responded before halftime. Winger Julian Quinones volleyed home from a scramble to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre urged his team forward after the break. England nearly extended their lead when Nico O’Reilly hit the post. However, defender Jarell Quansah received a red card in the 54th minute for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo after a VAR review.
England stayed composed. Anthony Gordon broke through and drew a foul from goalkeeper Raul Rangel. Harry Kane converted the penalty in the 60th minute to restore a two-goal advantage.
Mexico gained hope soon after. Kane conceded a penalty following another VAR check. Raul Jimenez scored from the spot in the 69th minute to make it 3-2.
England defended deep with 10 men for the final stages. Jordan Pickford and the backline repelled Mexico’s attacks through stoppage time. The visitors held on for victory in front of a passionate crowd.
England captain Harry Kane reflected afterward. “It was a crazy game. We had to fight. We had to find something. The occasion, the team, everything against us. We found a way,” he said.
