Gunmen on Sunday night attacked a commercial bus at Dungus Junction in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Reports indicated that at least seven people died in the incident.
The vehicle had stopped at the junction to drop off passengers when the attackers opened fire. One of the victims was identified as Ibrahim, the driver of the bus. He was a resident of Bukuru.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, confirmed the attack. He said the incident happened around 9.40 p.m.
“The victims were all passengers travelling to Jos when the terrorists opened fire on the vehicle. Among those killed was a member of Operation Rainbow. It is a very sad development, and we lament the loss of lives,” Tengwong stated.
Meanwhile, some passengers sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital. A resident of the community, Musa Dauda, reported that some of the injured later died while receiving treatment.
“Some of the passengers who were injured were taken to the hospital, but some of them died while receiving treatment. Others are still in the hospital receiving treatment,” Dauda said.
Further details indicated that five of the victims were residents of Kuru. Two other people, identified as a fish seller and an orange seller from Bukuru, received treatment after the attack. A minor was also among the survivors.
The identities of all the victims remained under verification. Authorities had yet to provide official confirmation of the full casualty figures or the identity of the attackers at the time of the reports.
