Sanwo-Olu, UN Join Forces to Tackle Climate Threats in Lagos

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu convened a high-level strategic roundtable with the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals, the United Nations Global Compact Networks and regional partners from Africa and the Caribbean.

The session focused on accelerating immediate solutions and securing sustainable climate financing. Officials aimed to protect coastal communities and critical infrastructure before future extreme weather events.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu addressed the urgency of the initiative in a post on his X handle. He noted that Lagos is a low-lying coastal megacity. Rising sea levels, coastal erosion and recurrent urban flooding pose direct and ongoing threats.

He stated: “Lagos is a coastal city, so climate change is not a distant concern for us. We see its effects in the flooding that affects our communities and the pressure it puts on our roads, homes, and businesses.”

Afterwards he stressed the need for structural protections and preemptive financial planning. The physical and economic toll on municipal infrastructure required action beyond traditional policy discussions.

A central theme of the roundtable involved bridging the funding gap for large-scale resilience projects. Participants discussed mobilising private sector capital alongside international development frameworks.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasised that municipal funding alone remains insufficient to build long-term defences against severe environmental pressures. He added: “The government cannot do this alone. We need strong partnerships and practical solutions that will help secure our economic future.”

The collaborative framework established with the United Nations Global Compact Networks and transatlantic partners seeks to create scalable models. These models cover coastal defence, infrastructure reinforcement and climate-resilient urban development across Lagos State.

The executive session took place amid ongoing global discussions on climate threats. Partners from across Africa and the Caribbean joined the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals to advance practical measures.
