Ronaldo Nets Two as Portugal Crush Uzbekistan 5-0 in World Cup Showdown

Portugal delivered a strong start to its World Cup campaign on Tuesday. The team defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 in Houston and took control of Group K.

Forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice and became the first player to score in six different World Cups. Ronaldo opened the scoring in the sixth minute. He added his second goal before halftime after he finished a pass from Bruno Fernandes.

“I am happy with the result and the way the team played today,” Ronaldo said after the match. “We worked hard and executed the plan.”

Left-back Nuno Mendes struck from a free kick in the 17th minute. An own goal by Uzbekistan extended the lead further. Substitute Rafael Leão scored the fifth goal late in the game.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes created chances throughout the match. Coach Roberto Martinez praised the performance. “The players showed discipline and intensity,” Martinez said. “We created many chances and defended well as a unit.”

Uzbekistan struggled against the European side. The debutants defended deep but conceded space. Coach Temur Kapadze admitted the difference in quality. “Portugal played at a high level,” Kapadze said. “We tried to stay compact, but we could not stop their attacks.”

Portugal dominated possession and generated numerous shots. Uzbekistan managed few threats. The result placed Portugal at the top of its group.

The victory gives Portugal momentum. The team will now prepare for its next match after this comprehensive performance.
