All Progressives Congress National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda stated that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara withdrew from the 2027 governorship primary voluntarily. Yilwatda addressed the political situation in Rivers State on Monday.
Yilwatda spoke during a media interaction. He stressed that party officials did not disqualify or force Fubara out of the race. “Fubara decided to step aside on his own terms,” Yilwatda said. “He passed the screening process before he chose to withdraw.”
The withdrawal occurred ahead of the APC governorship primary. Fubara announced his decision in a statement. He pledged support for whoever emerged as the party’s candidate. Party leaders noted that the move aimed to promote peace and unity in the state.
Yilwatda added that the governor acted independently. “The decision was personal to him,” he explained. “No external pressure influenced his choice.” This clarification came after speculation about internal party conflicts.
Yilwatda also addressed the role of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike. He confirmed that Wike does not belong to the APC. “Wike remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party,” Yilwatda said. “He cannot speak for or influence decisions within the APC.”
This statement followed reports of ongoing tensions between Fubara and Wike. Analysts observed that the clarification separated party structures from personal political rivalries.
APC officials emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together. Yilwatda urged coordination among leaders in Rivers State. He said the party would support its eventual candidate in the 2027 election.
