Reps Minority Caucus Urges Tinubu to Pause 2027 Politics, Focus on Security and Economy

The minority caucus in the House of Representatives urged President Bola Tinubu to suspend all political activities related to the 2027 elections. The group made the call during a news conference in Abuja on June 17.

Minority Leader Fred Agbedi addressed journalists on behalf of the caucus. He stated that Nigeria bled from worsening insecurity and economic hardship. Agbedi added that the government pushed the nation to the brink by prioritising 2027 politics over citizens’ welfare.

Fred Agbedi described the country as confused amid rising threats from insurgents, bandits and other criminal groups. The caucus condemned recent incidents, including the killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar in captivity, which it labelled a national shame.

The lawmakers also raised concerns over democratic institutions and alleged attempts to weaken opposition parties. They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to resist any sabotage of the electoral process.

Fred Agbedi demanded that President Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief, declare a six-month national security and economic recovery plan. He urged the president to overhaul the security architecture and invest more in intelligence operations. Agbedi told Tinubu to lead or leave as the lives of Nigerians mattered most.

The caucus vowed to continue holding the government accountable. It assured Nigerians that the 2027 elections would reflect the will of the people. The development came as insecurity persisted across several regions and economic pressures mounted on citizens.
