Real Madrid have moved quickly to secure one of Spain’s emerging young talents, reaching an agreement to sign 19-year-old Sergio Martínez from Racing Santander in a deal worth €3 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement on Saturday, giving the move his trademark “Here we go” verdict. According to Romano, Martínez will join Real Madrid immediately rather than returning to Racing Santander on loan, with the teenager set to sign a contract running until 2030.
The deal represents another statement of intent from the Spanish giants, who continue to invest heavily in promising young players while building for the future. Martínez has attracted significant attention after making a spectacular breakthrough at Racing and scoring on his LaLiga debut against Villarreal.
His rapid rise has been remarkable. Martínez, born in Laredo in 2007, had only recently emerged from Racing’s youth setup before becoming a first-team player and attracting interest from several major clubs. He is also a Spain Under-19 international and has been described as a versatile midfielder capable of operating as a No. 6, No. 8 or No. 10.
Real Madrid’s interest was not a reaction to one impressive performance. Reports from Spain indicate that the club had been monitoring Martínez for more than a year before stepping up its pursuit following his breakthrough. Racing’s sporting director Chema Aragón previously confirmed the seriousness of Madrid’s interest, declaring: “El Real Madrid viene con todo,” meaning the club was coming with everything to secure the player.
Martínez’s decision also highlights the appeal of the Bernabéu project. Earlier reports indicated that Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Villarreal were among the clubs interested in the teenager, but Madrid ultimately won the race for his signature.
The €3 million figure is particularly significant because Martínez’s Racing contract reportedly contained a €3 million release clause. Real Madrid, however, sought an agreement with the Santander club rather than simply triggering the clause, helping facilitate the transfer without creating unnecessary tension between the two sides.
With the agreement now reached, Martínez becomes another long-term investment in Real Madrid’s strategy of identifying elite young talent before their value explodes.
For Racing, it is the loss of a highly rated academy product. For Real Madrid, it could be the beginning of another major development story at the club.
