Nearly 10 years after Kim Kardashian was held at gunpoint and robbed in Paris, a French court has awarded the American celebrity €1 in symbolic damages over the attack that saw more than $6 million in jewellery stolen.
The Paris court handed down the decision on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, after Kardashian sought the minimal compensation as a gesture focused on accountability and recognition rather than financial recovery for the stolen valuables.
Kardashian was staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès during Paris Fashion Week on October 2, 2016, when a group of robbers disguised as police officers entered the premises. Two of the attackers forced their way into her suite, restrained her and escaped with millions of dollars worth of jewellery.
The stolen items included an engagement ring worth approximately $4 million. The ring had been given to Kardashian by Kanye West, her then-husband. Much of the jewellery taken during the robbery has never been recovered.
The case attracted international attention because of both Kardashian’s profile and the age of several suspects. French media referred to the accused as “les papys braqueurs”, meaning “grandpa robbers”, because a number of them were elderly at the time of the proceedings.
Eight defendants were found guilty in connection with the robbery. None returned to prison after the convictions because they had already spent time in pretrial detention, according to the Associated Press.
Kardashian had previously told the court about the lasting psychological impact of the attack and described it as the “most terrifying experience of my life.”
After the latest ruling, Kardashian and her stylist Simone Harouche, who was also a victim, welcomed the decision in a joint statement.
“The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us. Today’s decision is not about the compensation, but about accountability and recognition,” they said.
Harouche was awarded the same symbolic €1. The court also ordered compensation of €109,516 for the hotel receptionist, who said he was traumatised by the incident, while the Hôtel de Pourtalès received €50,000.
Kardashian’s €1 award therefore does not represent the value of the jewellery stolen in 2016. It was the symbolic amount she requested from the court, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that remained in the public spotlight for almost a decade.
