Ogun East APC stakeholders held a caucus meeting on Monday. They unanimously endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun as the consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election in the district.
The event took place at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu Ode. It drew members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, lawmakers, local government officials, councillors, ward executives and grassroots leaders from across the nine local governments.
Former senator Lekan Mustapha spoke on behalf of the group. He said the leaders adopted Abiodun because of his proven character and intellect. Mustapha added that the stakeholders would formally communicate the decision and purchase nomination forms for the governor.
Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi described the move as historic and unanimous. He stated that it reflected collective belief in Abiodun as the right choice for the Senate.
Additionally, House of Representatives member Hon Femi Ogunbanwo praised the governor’s record. He noted that Abiodun delivered peace and development across the state and would attract more federal dividends to Ogun East.
Sagamu Local Government Chairman Afolabi Odulate urged Abiodun to accept the call. He said it represented a collective appeal from the entire district and confidence in the governor’s leadership.
However, Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel arrived at the venue but party officials barred him from entering. The former governor stood outside with supporters during a tense standoff. Daniel addressed the crowd and expressed surprise at the action.
He said “We are here for our Ogun East APC caucus meeting but surprisingly we have been barred. Let it be on record that whatever they do here today is null and void.”
Daniel’s media aide Steve Oliyide later criticised the gathering. He called it a jamboree and self-endorsement. Oliyide questioned the absence of the endorsed candidate.
He stated “Can you name a child in his absence? The person being endorsed wasn’t even there to receive it.” He added that the meeting involved only individuals on the government’s payroll and did not reflect the true position of the party.
