Arsenal completed the signing of Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United on a four-year contract. The Premier League champions paid a fixed fee of £75 million for the 28-year-old, who had served as Newcastle captain.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022. He made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals across all competitions. He also captained the side to League Cup success in 2025.
Earlier in the summer, Guimaraes informed Newcastle officials of his desire to leave if a suitable offer arrived. He wanted to join Arsenal. After initial bids were rejected, the clubs reached agreement. Guimaraes then completed his medical in London.
In his statement, Guimaraes said: “This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together. I fell in love with this place. I really mean that. From my first day, the supporters, my teammates, Eddie and the staff, and everyone connected with the club made me and my family feel at home.”
He continued: “This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me, but I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family. To the supporters, thank you will never be enough, but I say it with all my heart. I will always be proud to have been part of this club’s journey. Thank you for everything.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta welcomed the arrival. “We are delighted to welcome Bruno Guimaraes to our club,” Berta said.
“Bruno is a player with a great mentality and great quality, who will bring strong leadership to our squad. With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player,” He stated.
He continued, “He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year. Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies.”
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson addressed the sale. “It wasn’t in the plan to sell Bruno. None of us or ownership wanted to sell Bruno. He’s our captain, he was very, very important to us and the debate over his price, it’s a world-record fee for a player of his age.”
In addition, Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson noted that Arsenal paid more than they had initially hoped. Guimaraes now links up with Arsenal’s midfield options as the champions prepare for the new season.
