Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar died in bandits’ captivity. The Katsina State Government confirmed the news on Saturday. Bandits had abducted the former Director of Defence Information and his wife nearly two weeks earlier.
Bandits ambushed Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife Hajiya Amina Abubakar. The incident happened on May 30 in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. The couple traveled from Abuja to attend a wedding when attackers stopped their vehicle.
Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension. Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs Nasiru Mu’azu issued the statement. “It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in the bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Nasiru Mu’azu stated.
Hajiya Amina Abubakar stayed in the hands of the captors. Earlier videos from the bandits’ den showed the couple in distress as they appealed for help. Security forces continued operations in the area.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a dark moment. He vowed stronger action against banditry that plagued the northwest region. The death highlighted ongoing security challenges in the area. Officials mourned the retired officer as a significant loss to the state and the nation.
