FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings against several Argentina players and an official following altercations after the 2026 World Cup final. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time on 19 July 2026 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
The world governing body acted on the recommendation of a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor. FIFA investigators examined match reports and video footage of the post match incidents.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina faced two counts of alleged assault under article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. He also faced one count of alleged unsporting behaviour. Meanwhile, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes faced three counts of alleged assault.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala faced one count of alleged assault. In addition, Argentina player Thiago Almada faced one count of alleged unsporting behaviour. Spain midfielder Gavi faced the same charge of unsporting behaviour.
FIFA stated in its announcement that the Disciplinary Committee had received the prosecutor’s report concerning incidents during the final between Spain and Argentina. The statement confirmed the opening of proceedings for potential breaches of the disciplinary code.
Video footage showed Argentina players involved in physical confrontations with Spain players as celebrations began. Reports indicated that Leandro Paredes appeared to strike Spain defender Eric Garcia. Nahuel Molina appeared to make contact with Spain captain Rodri.
Under the FIFA Disciplinary Code, assault carried a minimum three match suspension. Unsporting behaviour carried a minimum one match suspension. Those charged will present their cases before the Disciplinary Committee issues any decisions.
The Argentine Football Association also faced separate proceedings related to other tournament incidents. However, the focus remained on the post final clash involving the named individuals.
