Abia State Governor Alex Otti unveiled two newly acquired Boeing 737-800NG aircraft on Thursday. United Nigeria Airlines named the planes after the late literary icon Professor Chinua Achebe and the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe. The ceremony took place at Nesto Aviation Services in Ikeja, Lagos.
Governor Alex Otti served as chief guest and chief unveiler. He commended the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, for honouring distinguished Nigerians. “For remembering to honour our people, you will be honoured,” Governor Alex Otti said.
He also praised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for supporting private sector participation and the Abia Airport project. Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed Abia State’s readiness to serve as a hub for the airline.
Professor Obiora Okonkwo explained the airline’s choice. He stated that one aircraft honoured Professor Chinua Achebe for his global literary legacy.
The other recognised Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe for his exemplary traditional leadership, corporate accomplishments, and contributions to national development. Professor Obiora Okonkwo noted that the acquisitions reflected growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, expressed deep appreciation. “I am deeply honoured by this recognition and by the decision of United Nigeria Airlines to name one of its aircraft after me,” the monarch said.
He added that he felt especially pleased because the other aircraft bore the name of his kinsman and dear friend, the late Professor Chinua Achebe. The monarch highlighted Professor Chinua Achebe’s works that gave voice to Africa and shaped global understanding.
Festus Keyamo outlined the Federal Government’s aviation reforms. Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, expressed confidence in United Nigeria Airlines’ future expansion.
The two aircraft form part of a larger fleet addition as the airline plans to acquire four more planes. The event celebrated Nigerian excellence in literature, leadership, and aviation development.
