Manchester United secured a vital Premier League victory on Sunday as they defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 at Old Trafford. Captain Bruno Fernandes delivered his 20th assist of the season to equal the single-season record.
Defender Luke Shaw opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Shaw fired home after a sharp move that involved Fernandes. The goal gave United an early lead in their final home game of the campaign.
Nottingham Forest responded strongly after the break. Defender Morato leveled the score in the 53rd minute. Forward Matheus Cunha restored United’s advantage two minutes later with a clinical finish.
United pushed forward in search of more goals. In the 76th minute, Fernandes picked out forward Bryan Mbeumo with a precise cross. Mbeumo finished calmly to make it 3-1 and hand Fernandes his record-equaling 20th assist. The Portuguese midfielder joined legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne on the all-time list.
Forest refused to surrender. Midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White pulled one back in the 78th minute to set up a tense finish. United held firm, however, and claimed all three points.
After the match, Fernandes downplayed individual glory. He said it was a special record because Henry and De Bruyne held it as standout players for many years. Fernandes added that he did not want to focus too much on it since the team achieved its target of Champions League qualification.
The win lifted United into a strong position as they wrapped up their home fixtures. Fernandes continued to drive the team’s attacking play throughout the contest. The result highlighted United’s resilience in a competitive season.
