EXCLUSIVE: Some careers transcend sport,’ US envoy pays tribute to Ronaldo

John Arrigo, the United States Ambassador to Portugal, paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo on Thursday after the Portuguese football star retired from international duty. Arrigo posted the message on X through the US Embassy in Lisbon.

Arrigo described Ronaldo’s career as one that goes beyond the game. He highlighted the player’s long service to the national team.

“Some careers transcend sport. Cristiano Ronaldo’s is one of them. For more than two decades, he has worn Portugal’s colours with extraordinary determination, talent and pride,” Arrigo said.

He then noted the statistics. Ronaldo scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. Arrigo added that these numbers told only part of the story.

“The memories he has given millions of fans, and the inspiration he has provided to generations of young athletes, are immeasurable,” Arrigo continued.

Arrigo went on to mark the close of this phase in Ronaldo’s career. “As he closes this chapter with the national team, we celebrate not only an extraordinary athlete, but a remarkable ambassador for his country,” he stated.

Finally, Arrigo offered direct thanks. “Thank you, Cristiano, for the passion, the perseverance and the memories. Portugal, and football fans everywhere, will always be proud,” he said.

Ronaldo made his senior debut for Portugal in 2003. He later became the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. He captained the side to the European Championship title in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

The ambassador’s statement followed Ronaldo’s decision to step away from international football after more than two decades of service.
