Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday. Matheus Cunha scored a deflected goal in the 89th minute to rescue a point. The result left Manchester United manager Michael Carrick facing continued scrutiny after a difficult week.
Fulham took the lead in the 63rd minute through an own goal by Lisandro Martínez. Calvin Bassey drove forward and struck a low shot. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens parried the effort with his legs. The ball then struck Martínez and rolled into the net. Meanwhile, the visitors had controlled much of the possession yet failed to convert their chances before the break.
United pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages. Substitute Patrick Dorgu played the ball into Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian struck from outside the area. The shot deflected heavily off David Affengruber and wrong-footed Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno. As a result, the ball found the net and levelled the score. United avoided a third successive defeat across all competitions.
Michael Carrick’s side entered the international break with five points from five Premier League matches. They sat in 12th place. Earlier results included a home loss to Manchester City and a League Cup exit to Brighton after surrendering a two-goal lead.
In addition, Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa saw his team rise from the bottom of the table with their second point of the season.
United recorded 29 shots to Fulham’s 12. However, the visitors lacked clinical finishing throughout. Leno produced several important saves to deny further efforts. The draw therefore offered limited relief for Carrick as questions about results continued. Both teams now prepare for the next fixtures after the break.
