Chelsea have officially confirmed the arrival of Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, completing a major move for the Argentina international as the Blues strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the new Premier League season.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has signed a three-year contract with Chelsea after bringing his six-year spell at Aston Villa to an end. While Chelsea did not disclose the financial terms of the transfer, reports put the fee at £7.5 million.
Martínez arrives at Stamford Bridge with an impressive résumé. The Argentine was a key member of the national team that won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has also collected two Copa América titles. His performances have established him as one of the most experienced goalkeepers in international football.
During his time at Aston Villa, Martínez made 256 appearances and played an important role in the club’s rise to the upper reaches of English football. His departure comes after Villa strengthened their goalkeeping options with the signing of Japan international Zion Suzuki.
The move also gives Chelsea a goalkeeper with significant experience at the highest level as the club seeks greater consistency between the posts. Martínez is expected to compete with Robert Sánchez for the starting position, adding another major battle for places to Chelsea’s squad.
Speaking after completing his move, Martínez made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond simply joining another Premier League club.
“It’s a dream to be here! I really want to be successful here. I’m someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club,” the Argentine said.
The goalkeeper also described his move to Chelsea as an important step for both himself and his family, expressing his excitement about beginning a new chapter at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s official announcement confirmed that the player is “delighted to be at this football club” and “can’t wait to get started.”
For Chelsea, Martínez’s arrival represents more than another transfer. The club are bringing in a goalkeeper with proven experience of winning major international honours and competing under intense pressure.
With the new season already underway and Chelsea targeting success on multiple fronts, Martínez now has the opportunity to establish himself as a decisive figure in the Blues’ pursuit of trophies.
His message is already clear: he has not arrived at Stamford Bridge simply to participate. He has arrived to win.
